ACLJ Calls on Full Senate to Give Nominee Up-or-Down Vote by End of Week
WASHINGTON, Jan. 25, 2006—Judge Alito has cleared a critical hurdle by gaining confirmation by a 10-8 vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee; however, the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ) said it is unfortunate the vote broke along party lines. The ACLJ now calls on the full Senate to give the Supreme Court nominee an up-or-down vote by the end of the week.
"This is an important moment in the confirmation process but it is unfortunate that the Democrats on the Judiciary Committee put partisan politics first in their vote," said Jay Sekulow, chief counsel of the ACLJ, who is working to support the Judge Alito nomination. "Judge Alito is uniquely qualified for a seat on the high court and the American people want this process to be concluded without further delay. That's why it is important for the full Senate to give Judge Alito an up-or-down vote by the end of the week. Without question, Judge Alito's commitment to the rule of law and to upholding the Constitution is the hallmark of his judicial philosophy. It's time for the Senate to end the delay game and confirm Judge Alito as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court."
Sekulow says the ACLJ is airing radio advertisements urging the Senate to give Judge Alito an up-or-down vote without further delay. The American Center for Law and Justice specializes in constitutional law and is based in Washington, D.C. and is online at www.aclj.org.
