U.S. Sovereignty at Risk?
ACLJ Urges the President Not to Sell-Out America’s Independence
WASHINGTON, April 6, 2009—The president's European trip has raised serious questions about the security of America's sovereignty. So says Jay Sekulow, chief counsel of the American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), the nation's top conservative public interest law firm. Sekulow and the ACLJ are urging Americans to sign a Letter of Protest to President Barack Obama expressing concern about the Administration's new strategy of internationalism - embracing foreign and economic policies that may very well put U.S. sovereignty at risk.
"President Obama is embarking on a new and dangerous direction for our nation," said Sekulow. "The Obama Administration - through its foreign and economic policies - is embracing an ideology of global governance. This strategy may put at risk our national sovereignty - our constitutional framework - all in the interest of international cooperation. There's nothing wrong with cooperating in a global environment, but the United States, with its unique form of government, must not be placed in a position where it cedes its independence."
The ACLJ says the Obama Administration is moving in this disturbing direction with recent comments, speeches and actions. Citing one example, the ACLJ notes that the Obama Administration is reversing a long-standing U.S. policy refraining from participation in the United Nations Human Rights Council, which includes member nations that are among the most egregious violators of human rights in the world.
In addition, there is growing controversy surrounding the Obama Administration's nomination of Harold Koh, Dean of the Yale Law School, as the top legal counsel in the U.S. Department of State. Critics say Koh endorses an ‘international-first' philosophy that puts the interests of the global community above our own.
"It's one thing to talk about cooperation, but it's very dangerous to embrace a philosophy where the United States is put in a position to be subservient to the European Union or the United Nations," said Sekulow. "This ‘transnationalist' approach is something our Founding Fathers never envisioned and never supported when they drafted our unique and defining Constitution."
The ACLJ is asking Americans to sign on to its Letter of Protest to the White House. You can find the letter at www.aclj.org.
