Point University to Launch Men’s Lacrosse Program, Hires Alumnus Nathan Booker to Lead Team
Skyhawks Add 11th Intercollegiate Sport as They Relocate Primary Campus to West Point & Move to NAIA Status
EAST POINT, Ga., Feb. 13, 2012—Point University will add men's lacrosse to its athletic roster for the next academic year, beginning competition in spring 2013 on its new campus in West Point. The university has hired alumnus and veteran lacrosse player and coach Nathan Booker to lead the program. A member of the Point University Class of 2011, Booker understands the private, Christian four-year university's mission and comes to the program with valuable experience that should serve the men’s lacrosse team on and off the field.
"Coaching lacrosse at Point University will allow me to combine two of my passions - a love for the sport and a desire to serve the next generation of cultural leaders motivated to take their faith into the world," said Booker.
A three-sport letterman at Fork Union Military Academy in Fork Union, Va., former member of the Atlanta Lacrosse Club and a US/Canadian-certified lacrosse coach, Booker has served as a private lacrosse instructor for male and female athletes seeking to earn spots on high school or collegiate rosters. At Atlanta's Top Dog Sports, Booker trained more than 300 athletes, many of whom went on to set school records, receive team accolades and play on high school state championship and collegiate teams.
Booker also served as an assistant coach at Atlanta-area Northview High School from 2004-2007, where he helped lead the team to a #6 ranking in Georgia. He coached at North Atlanta High School, which finished as a high school club division runner-up in the 2008-09 season, and at Oglethorpe University, where he served as goalie coach during the school's first lacrosse season in 2010. Booker graduated from Point University with a degree in organizational leadership and is currently pursuing a master's in sports management at the United States Sports Academy.
"Point University students want to be points of influence in our world - whether it's on the field or in the classroom," said Point University Athletic Director Kevin Porter. "Nathan Booker has the character and leadership abilities to help our student-athletes succeed on the field, in the classroom and in all walks of life."
Booker is actively recruiting students to play on the inaugural Point University lacrosse team. Those interested in playing should contact him via email at Nathan.Booker@Point.edu.
